Pécs is the centre of Baranya County, the fifth largest city in Hungary located in the southern part of the country. Hungary's first university was founded in Pécs in 1367, which has contributed greatly to the city's development in recent centuries. With its fantastic Mediterranean microclimate and diversity, it attracts both domestic and foreign tourists all year round. The history of Pécs dates back over 2000 years, and the name of the old Roman town, "Sopianae" is still found in the names of institutions and products. Although its development suffered several setbacks throughout the centuries, such as the Tatar invasions and the Ottoman-Turkish Rule, it has not only survived, but developed into a pleasant, modern town, rich in historical monuments, an administrative, cultural and educational centre, offering a lot to those who wish to live or study here. The town is famous for its museums, galleries, festivals and cultural events. The downtown of Pécs is a unique mixture of the relics of Early Christianity, the Turkish reign and the achievements of modern architecture and arts. In 2010, Pécs was one of the Cultural Capitals of Europe along with Essen and Istanbul. The attractiveness of Pécs and its surroundings is enhanced by the fact that, according to 2019 data, it is the home of Hungary most popular wine region, the Villány wine region.
The University of Pécs with its 20 000 students, with 1 400 lecturers and researchers, with its 10 faculties is one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary and the centre of knowledge within the Transdanubian region. Its roots date back to 1367.
The UP represents classical values, while the challenges of present and future times are being adapted successfully as well. Covering a wide range of educational areas, it reaches out far beyond the city of Pécs. The UP operates an independent faculty in Szekszárd and runs significant training programmes in the towns of Kaposvár, Szombathely and Zalaegerszeg and even abroad in Zombor.
The more than 300 training programmes cover almost every field of science and art. The reputation and popularity of the university is enhanced by the great number of foreign students attracted to us by the courses held in foreign languages, the various exchange programmes and the 17 colleges for advanced studies. The PhD/DLA programmes are representing the highest level of education.
The University of Pécs set the internationalization of the institution as a strategic and development priority. As part of this the UP offers more then 70 full and several short training programmes in English as well as in other foreign languages.
